REDESIGNS
Modulus Trailer Redesign
Being an automation game, a lot of my focus was directed towards the ambient factory-esque sounds that gradually ramp up the more buildings and structures you have in your world. There also seems to be a sense of calm and nature from what I could gather. Adding some bird calls and wind textures helped reinforce this idea.
As a fan of automation games, I'm excited to see developers putting their own spin on the formula.
Tiny Glade Trailer Redesign
I feel as though games like Tiny Glade and many other indie titles are made with sound design as a focal point; they feel tactile and satisfying, which is what I tried to emulate in this redesign here.
I think the part I'm most proud of is the sound of the trees being placed, which I achieved by layering some recordings of wood planks being flexed and bowed, as well as some crunchy sounds from some wood sources.
Mini Motorways Trailer Redesign
Mini Motorways has a bubbly, vibrant, but also simplistic art direction, and the sound design matches this well. Trying to match these traits, I pitched many vehicle sounds up to make them sound "smaller"; the opposite can also be true to make sounds feel bigger.
For the soundtrack, I wanted to make something upbeat and energetic, and ended up settling on a two-step garage drum pattern as the foundation. I had a lot of fun syncing parts of the music to the video to emphasize certain parts of the trailer.
Potion Craft Trailer Redesign
Again, following the trend of tactile sounds, Potion Craft is another great example of texture being used to give a sense of feel and weight. The mortar and pestle, the plants being harvested, the paper rustling, all these sounds come together to form a cohesive and tactile soundscape. Simple Foley is often the most convincing.
While this sound design is not the most interesting, I think it does its job well by not standing out too much and matching the art style.
P.T. Redesign
I made this short redesign after watching a video on horror sound design. A game without audio will lose its pace and immersion; a Horror game without audio would be like reading a thriller without punctuation, no rhythm, and a lack of suspense.
This is why audio in horror games is so important to get right. Subtle and almost subliminal audio messages are fed to the player to build anticipation, audio clues like making the space feel smaller as they round a corner...
